Dr. Emerson has had a distinguished career in orthopedics and sports medicine. After graduating with a D.O. degree from The University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri, he began surgical training in the largest hospital in the Department of Defense, the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He is a decorated combat Air Force flight surgeon accruing several air medals during his tour in Vietnam. This was followed by four years of orthopedic residency in Phoenix, Arizona and a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
During Dr. Emerson’s first year of practice in 1978, he established the much acclaimed high school student-athlete comprehensive sports physicals. For seventeen years, he served as the orthopedic surgeon and team physician for The Phoenix Suns, The Phoenix Mercury and The Arizona Rattlers.

He has authored award winning publications and research, and has served as the President of the National Sports Medicine Academies. He is also a founding member of the Arizona Chapter of the College Football Hall of Fame. Dr. Emerson is a board member of the Arizona Football Coaches Association and serves as Chairman of the annual, “Care of the Athlete” seminars. In 2005, Phoenix Magazine named him as a “Top Doc” in orthopedic surgery. He is also the only physician to be named an honorary staff member of John C. Lincoln, Deer Valley Hospital.
